PSW assist with tasks of daily leaving and companionship. They may work in long-term care facilities, home care settings, retirement homes, supportive housing, group homes, adult day programs, hospitals and educational facilities. The range of services provided by a PSW is determined by the individual need of each clients and may include assistance with routine activities of living including personal care, mobility, home management , meal preparation, family care and assisting with social and recreational activities.
The program aims to equip students with but not limited to the following the skills and competencies:
* Understanding of the client reconize proglem and meet client's expectations.
*Compassionate nature, personal care skills, and communication skills to assist clients to live a dignified life.
* Expertise in providing daily life support and companionship to clients and maintaining healthy conversational relationships with clients while assisting them with daily living tasks.
*Ability to think critically and make decisions in emergency situations. Exceptional house management skills.
* Great housekeeping abilities, personal care training, and effective interpersonal skills to bring a positive difference in the lives of clients.
* Commitment to service excellence including continuing education and continuous quality improvement.
The Personal Support Worker Certification program at Canada Topline College trains students to provide physical, psychological and social assistance to their patients. Develop the full range of skills required to assist people with their personal and household needs in order to ensure their contentment and well being.
You will learn how to best provide support and personal care to individuals including assisting with dressing, personal hygiene, mobility and routine activities in accordance with the Regulated Health Professionals Act.
* In-school theory & practice (includes testing) – 390
* Clinical Placement (Long-Term Care Facility) – 200 hours
* Clinical Placement (Community) – 110 hours
* Total Length – 700 hours – 28 weeks

A Support Worker's duties and responsibilites can be grouped into the following categories:
(1) Provide personal care - Assiting with activities of daily living.
(2) Support for nurses and other health care providers - Following the established care plan for each client: to clean the equipment, to measure and report vital signs, to assist with simple wound care and to administer medication
(3)Family Support - Assisting with admissions and discharges by introducing the client and family to the facility and helping the client unpack and settle in.
(4) Social Support - Helping clients participate in social activities. including providing the clients with enjoyment,recreation, and a chance to meet with friends.
(5)Housekeeping and Home Management - to do a variety of housekeeping tasks in a facility setting, including making beds,delivering meals, tidying up living areas and maintaining supplies.
The student applying for admission into the PSW Program must meet the following requirements:
(1) Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or Equivalent, or mature student status
(2) CPR & First Aid Certificate
(3) Police Check and Health Report
